About
Maryam is a Brisbane-based visual artist and art teacher. She studied Visual Arts at the University of Canberra and later continued her studies in Education and Management at Queensland University of Technology.
Her work is inspired by her interest in ancient art, cultural heritage and contemporary art. Maryam enjoys bringing elements of the past into a contemporary context and exploring the connections that can be created between different cultures, places and generations.
Calligraphy painting is an important part of her artistic practice. She is particularly interested in the beauty and movement of letters and lines, using calligraphy not only as writing, but as a visual form of expression. She also works with painting, pottery and sculpture.
Alongside her own art practice, Maryam has been teaching art to children and young people in Australia for several years. Working with young artists has become an important part of her creative life. She enjoys encouraging children to experiment, use their imagination and discover their own way of making art.
Maryam sees art as a shared language between people, cultures and generations. She believes that an artwork does not always need words or translation to be understood — sometimes a line, a colour, a shape or an image can communicate something that words cannot.
Through her work, both as an artist and an art teacher, Maryam hopes to bring people together through creativity and create connections between the ancient and the contemporary, the familiar and the new.
